RILKE ART STUDENTS SHOW OFF!
Six of Frau Yuliya's students from Rilke Schule will exhibit their art work at the annual Anchorage School District Art Exhibition from March 6th- April 11th at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.  The students' works are a series of autumnal Alaskan landscapes done in acrylic. They were completed during art lessons at Rilke Schule. Congratulations, students! There will be a student reception on Wednesday, March 17th from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Admission will be free for the Rilke Schule community during the reception.

GYM SHOES
Herr Strauch would like to remind all students of the importance of wesring appropriate gym shoes during P.E. class. Parents please be sure that your child has appropriate footware for class. Thanks!

A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY COMMITTEE
At long last the Rilke Schule 'Jo Sanders' Library is operational! If you have the opportunity to stop by, you may have noticed that we have some gaps in a few categories, especially in upper elementary non-fiction. There is a way to supplement our current inventory without costing you a dime. We have set up a RIlke Schule account at Title Wave Books. If you have books you no longer want, you can take them to Title Wave and they will apply the value to the school's account to enable us to purchase more books. Title Wave is located at 1360 W. Northern Lights Blvd. For your convenience, we will also have a box located at the school where books can be left.

This can be a long-term solution to improving our library, in conjunction with the annual book fair. The power of hundreds of families each participating in their own small way will add up to a fantastic educational resource for our children. In addition we will announce volunteer opportunities, soon.

2007-2009 YEARBOOKS ARE IN!!
Please check you childrens backpacks this week.  For those of you who still receive the email but are no longer at Rilke, please feel free to contact us by emailing rilke.schule.verein@gmail.com or by calling the school (742-7455) so we can make arrangements.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders!  A2 PREP CLASS AVAILABLE
Frau Judith and Frau Claudia started teaching an A2 prep class every Monday after school, from 3:15 to 4:15 pm.   The class is free of charge and open to all students who have pre-registered for the test.  The A2 is the first of a series of language proficiency tests that the German government issues, and it will be administered here at Rilke Schule in April.  If you would like to enroll your child in this class, please see Frau Judith or Frau Claudia, or send in a note with your student.  We started the class on Monday, January 25th.  We encourage more students to participate and prepare for this test.

FOURTH QUARTER O.I. PROGRAMS AND VOLUNTEERS REQUESTED
Now is the time to be thinking about leading an Optional Intensive Program for the 4th quarter this year. The 4th quarter begins right after Spring Break. O.I. Fridays will be March 19th, April 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th, May 7th, and May 14th. If you are interested in leading a program for all or part of the quarter, please contact Denise at rilke.optional.intensives@gmail.com.

CONTRIBUTIONS IN LIEU OF VOLUNTEER TIME
If you are too busy to volunteer your time for the school, you can make a contribution to the school. One of our regular expenses is the school website. If you would like to support the school by paying $16 monthly for the school website, please contact Principal Wrabetz or Julie at the front desk. Thanks very much! We are also looking for contributions to help support our intern program.

OUTDOOR GEAR
The weather is changing quickly. Please be sure that your children are coming to school with cold weather gear for recess and physical education. By Anchorage School District Policy, all children are required to be outside for recess unless it is colder than 10 degrees below zero or raining. Children will go out if it is lightly sprinklings or snowing. Please have them dress accordingly.

DROP OFF - PICK UP REMINDER
First, thank you for everyone's patience this year as we now adjust to the 'winter version' of our Drop-off and Pick-up routines.  As a reminder, please follow these basic guidelines to make the process as efficient and safe as possible:

1) Please do not exit your vehicle to assist your child(ren); school staff is assigned the task of helping students get out of [or into] your vehicle.  By staying in your vehicle, it is easier to get everyone through the line as quickly and safely as possible.
2) Please do not use the Rilke Schule parking lot as the turn-around point to join the drop-off/pick-up line.  The line has usually already formed behind Taco Loco and Hope Community Resources, so we ask you to continue down 53rd Ave to turn around and join the line.
3) Please do not block any of our neighbors driveways, including the back entrance to Taco Loco.
4) Please pay attention to, and obey, the crossing guards and traffic controllers; they do their best to keep everyone moving as efficiently and as safely as they can.

LOTTERY APPLICATIONS FOR 2010-2011 AVAILABLE
We are now accepting lottery applications for the 2010-2011 school year. Applications are also available in the school office. If you are the parent of guardian of a child that will be starting kindergarten in August 2010 and you are interested in having your child attend Rilke Schule, please be sure to fill out a lottery application. Students currently attending Rilke Schule that will be returning for the 2010-2011 school year do not need to fill out a new lottery application. However, siblings of current students and all new to Rilke Schule students must enter the lottery. Please spread the word!

DON'T THROW THEM AWAY... RAISE $$ FOR RILKE... IN JUST MINUTES
Save your Box Tops, Campbell's labels, Tyson's tear strips and UPC's from Dixon/Ticonderoga pencils.  Each classroom has a collection box for labels.  So before you throw that box, package or can away make sure you've taken off the label.  Every little bit helps and the points add up quickly if we all do our part.  For more information please call Myrna Jensen at 350-6260 or send an e-mail to akmnorgirl@yahoo.com
